Many students are going off to college for the first time and there is a lot of excitement ahead for them. It will be a lot of new experiences including the fact that many are going to have, for the very first time, bills that need to be paid. This means they are going to have to find a job and one that will meet their hectic school schedule.
Throughout the year, a student will take classes at different times of the day. It will be very difficult for them to work a set schedule and so their first priority is to find a job that will allow them to adjust their hours when needed.
If you live off campus in a regular neighborhood you might be able to make some extra money by doing things for your neighbors. Students make extra money walking dogs, mowing lawns, painting houses and other chores that are time flexible.
Part-time work can be suitable if you are disciplined enough to be able to stick to a schedule. There are several retail and food service positions that are always looking to hire workers on a part-time basis. Many colleges will offer work-study positions that are specifically designed for students and your financial advisor will usually have information on this type of employment. The pay may not be the best but they are often very understanding when it comes to changing your schedule.
Another alternative is the new opportunity the Internet brings. College students often play poker online but that is hardly a job and most fail at that. There are students who have learned how to run websites and make their money by selling products or through affiliate marketing. This is not something that you can make money with right away but if you are willing to put in the time, you can be successful down the line.
Finding a job is not easy for anybody in the economic environment we have today. College students need to know that they may be looking for longer than they wish but they need to just keep pounding the pavement until they find that job that fits their needs.
